How was Vasont developed?
Progressive Information Technologies, a leader in the information management and publishing services industry since 1950, recognized a need in the marketplace for a content management system that would give organizations the ability to create content once and publish it to print, CD-ROM and Web formats.

During 1992, Progressive Information Technologies’ team of technologists acknowledged the “pain points” associated with managing and publishing content to multiple media, which led to the creation of a content management system for WB Saunders’ Dorland’s Medical Dictionary. From this project, the software developed into a product that could manage and repurpose any type of content.

Since Vasont was officially launched back in 1997, its features and functionality have been continually improved and enhanced - delivering a robust content management system that has helped to efficiently manage and repurpose large volumes of content.

What differentiates Vasont from other content management systems?
As a single-source content management system for multi-channel publishing, Vasont goes one step further than traditional content management systems that focus on managing and publishing content to one medium (i.e., the Web). Vasont empowers users to create, organize, manage, and publish multilingual content for multi-channel delivery to print, CD-ROM, Web, and wireless formats.

Through its Vasont Universal Integrator (VUI) software extension, the system seamlessly integrates with leading XML editing tools, empowering editors and authors to access Vasont’s functionality directly from their XML editing tool’s interface for their XML content. More than just a bridge between software programs, this tight integration with XML editing tools eliminates the need for users to toggle back-and-forth between applications; instead, they can work within their XML editor while accessing, editing, and updating their content in Vasont.

Vasont’s powerful bi-directional link management capabilities make an organization’s content accurate. Through its pointers, Vasont greatly enhances the speed of building links and the accuracy of links. The system links separate “chunks” of content, such as sections, paragraphs, or chapters, to each other and automatically makes the links bi-directional, making it impossible to delete linked content without first resolving the cross-references.

Vasont’s full Unicode support capabilities, including UTF-8 and UTF-16, allow the system to display and manage all character sets. These capabilities for multilingual translation management enable organizations with global documentation needs to easily manage and edit their multilingual content from a single source while significantly reducing translation costs. Vasont links the multilingual versions of the content with the corresponding English version; therefore, when a change is made to the English content, Vasont automatically identifies the appropriate components for translation, not entire chapters or manuals.

Vasont is also more advanced than other content management systems because of its exclusive processing options, which are built-in customizations that allow users without programming experience to configure Vasont for their specific needs and business logic. Processing options are quicker to implement than traditional system customizations and decrease implementation and customization costs. Processing options also improve efficiencies by automating various tasks for users, such as sending automatic emails, performing math calculations, automating workflow tasks, and generating indexes, among hundreds more.

What key benefits does Vasont provide?
Return on Investment—Vasont saves organizations time and money by automating tasks, allowing for new product prototyping and deployment in short periods of time, ensuring accurate multi-channel publishing from a single source of content, maximizing content reuse, and maintaining a complete audit trail of all revisions.

Easy to Use—Vasont is easy for the end user to initiate and use, and it requires less than one week of training for implementation. Through the system’s Vasont Universal Integrator feature, authors and editors can access Vasont’s functionality from the toolbar menu of their favorite XML authoring/editing tools. Additionally, Vasont makes it simple for users without programming experience to customize their interface. If additional support is needed, Vasont Systems will help clients design their interface.

Content Sharing and Reuse—Vasont’s true single-source functionality centralizes content in one powerful repository, facilitating content sharing and reuse across multiple media formats. Vasont stores only one copy of the content in its robust repository and keeps track of all the content’s uses so that changes only need to be made once in order to be immediately available for global or specific uses.

Repurposing of Content—Vasont’s powerful reuse capabilities empower organizations to quickly repurpose their documentation as frequently as daily or weekly across multiple media channels, including print, CD-ROM, Web and wireless, without costly data conversions.

Lower Translation Costs—Vasont has full Unicode support capabilities for multilingual translation management that enables organizations to easily manage and edit their multilingual content from a single source while minimizing translation costs.

Efficient Workflow—Vasont’s workflow capability is a methodical and secure process. It ensures that an entire organization has the ability to effectively and efficiently access, update, edit and review content through checkpoints and e-mail notifications—alerting users of the project’s status and next step.

Content Accuracy—Because Vasont’s single-source functionality requires that content is only stored once in its robust database, organizations can rely on Vasont to provide accurate content across all of its documentation regardless of media format.

Compliance Support—For organizations who must comply with governmental regulations, Vasont provides powerful versioning capabilities that enable the system to track all changes made to a piece of content. Users can attach comments to the content, search for old content, and reinstate any previous version of that content.

Support for Industry Standards—Vasont has the unique capability to allow organizations to use multiple DTDs and schemas, including custom DTDs or industry standards including DITA and SCORM.

Security and Protection—Vasont’s administrative capabilities ensure that only authorized users throughout an organization can access the content with their unique IDs and passwords.

Client Support—With years of in-depth industry experience in publishing and content management, Vasont’s team of technologists provide clients with unmatched insight and support from the selection process through ongoing implementation. Each client has access to a project manager who ensures that the client’s objectives are met and questions are promptly answered.
